la boca

The History

La Boca is the old port neighborhood through which, between 1870-1930, 6 million European immigrants arrived to make Argentina their home.

As they settled in precarious tennaments called conventillos, they merged with the local Afro-Argentines and indigenous people.

From this mix much of local culture was born, including the famous tango and our own slang, lunfardo.

During the 1960s, it was turned into an artsy, colorful hub by artist Quinquela Martin and his neighbors.

Don't miss...
  • Visit the old conventillos where immigrants lived

  • Stop by the Quinquela Martín Museum and go to the terrace to get panoramic views of the area. There's also great contemporary art with a view half a block away, at the Proa Foundation.

  • La Boca is packed with amazing street art, so be sure to take many pics!

  • Football fans, rejoice! La Boca is home to Boca Juniors, one of the largest Argentine teams. Make sure to visit their stadium!
Safety

The touristic part of La Boca is safe and very much worth visiting during day time.

We don't recommend visiting this neighborhood between 5pm and 10am, as the area becomes a little sketchy after the commercial area shops close.

Pickpockets and thieves usually wait for distracted tourists outside of the touristic part, so we recommend getting transportation to/from the area and avoid 'getting lost' there.
