The History

Welcome to the place where it all started, Plaza de Mayo and its surroundings.

The city of Buenos Aires was founded in this area in 1580 by the Spanish conquistadores, and from that moment onwards the area became the seat of the political and administrative power of the country.

In this area you'll find stunning public buildings, churches, banking institutions and tokens from the colonial times.

Don't miss...
  • Plaza de Mayo, the foundational square of Buenos Aires. Here you'll find Presidential Palace Casa Rosada, the Cathedral and the colonial city hall called Cabildo.

  • Centro Cultural Kirchner is the old post office bulding, turned into a stunning cultural center where you can participate in free tango lessons, visit art exhibits for kids and even dine with a view.

  • Avenida de Mayo is the epicenter of spectacular buildings in an array of architectural styles.
Know before you go

Argentines are very politically active and when they're unhappy -or too happy!- they gather to demonstrate in this square.

There is a fascinating rich political history to this square, where the people overthrew dictatorships, defended democracy, fought and conquered rights and started movements.

Now, when you see a demonstration, you'll know it's just business as usual!
